How does the Route 66 app work?
Our Progressive Web App uses your phone's GPS to automatically play engaging audio stories about Route 66's history, people, and hidden gems as you drive. You'll also receive notifications about nearby attractions, restaurants, and exclusive sponsor offers.
Is the app free to use?
Yes! The core features including GPS audio stories, interactive maps, and basic navigation are completely free. Some premium features and extended content may be available in the future.
Using the App
How do I install the app?
Visit our website on your mobile browser and tap 'Add to Home Screen'. The app will install like a native app but works across all devices without needing app store approval.
Do I need GPS/location permissions?
Yes, location permissions are required for GPS-triggered audio stories and nearby offers. Your location data is only used within the app and is never sold to third parties.
Can I use the app offline?
Yes! The app caches audio stories and maps for offline use. We recommend downloading content for your planned route before starting your journey.
Is it safe to use while driving?
Absolutely. The app is designed for hands-free use with audio-only content. GPS triggers happen automatically, and we encourage pulling over for any visual features.

What kind of stories will I hear?
Our audio stories cover Route 66's rich history, famous landmarks, local legends, hidden gems, and personal stories from people who've traveled the Mother Road. Stories range from 60-120 seconds.
How many audio stories are available?
We launch with over 200 audio stories covering the most popular sections of Route 66. We'll be adding new content regularly, especially for the 2026 Centennial celebration.
Can I skip or replay stories?
Yes! Each story plays automatically when you enter a trigger zone, but you can pause, skip, or replay any story using the audio controls.
Sponsor Offers
What are sponsor offers?
Local businesses and national brands offer exclusive deals to Route 66 travelers. These can include discounts at restaurants, hotels, gas stations, and attractions along the route.
How do I redeem offers?
Show your phone screen with the offer code at participating businesses, or mention you're a Route 66 app user. Some offers may require a promo code or specific instructions.
Are sponsor offers available everywhere on Route 66?
Offers are available at participating businesses within approximately 30 miles of Route 66. We're constantly adding new partners, especially in popular destinations.

How long does it take to drive Route 66?
A complete cross-country trip typically takes 2-3 weeks, covering 2,448 miles through 8 states. Many travelers focus on popular segments like the Illinois or California portions.
What's the best time to travel Route 66?
Spring and fall offer the best weather and fewer crowds. Summer can be hot, especially in the Southwest, while winter may bring snow in northern sections.
Do I need a special vehicle?
Any vehicle works, but many travelers prefer RVs, motorcycles, or classic cars to fully embrace the Route 66 experience. Make sure your vehicle is road-ready for long drives.
